Third meeting of Australia-India Education and Skills Council

The third meeting of the Australia-India Education and Skills Council (AIESC) will meet in Delhi today (8 December). 

A delegation led by Ministers Jason Clare and Andrew Giles and Assistant Minister Julian Hill will meet with Indian Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary and Indian education leaders. 

The meeting will focus on: 

  • Delivering stronger higher education ties, including the commitments of 7 Australian universities to establish campuses in India and expansion of critical skills courses;
  • Advancing joint work to map teacher education standards and early childhood education and care qualifications;
  • Driving innovation in education delivery methods. 

India is one of Australia’s most important education partners. AISEC plays an important role in strengthening collaboration and building the education, research and skills base of both countries. 

The Australian delegation includes university vice-chancellors and representatives of education and skills peak regulators and authorities, including: 

  • Professor Attila Brungs, Vice-Chancellor, University of New South Wales
  • Professor Amit Chakma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Western Australia
  • Professor Colin Stirling, Vice-Chancellor, Flinders University
  • Professor George Williams, Vice-Chancellor, Western Sydney University
  • Professor Simon Biggs, Vice-Chancellor, James Cook University
  • Dr Mary Russell, Chief Executive Officer, TEQSA
  • Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner, Jobs and Skills Australia
  • Ms Saxon Rice, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Skills Quality Authority
  • Mr Derek Scott, Chair, ACARA. 

Minister Clare will also meet with the Vietnam Minister for Education and Training, Nguyễn Kim Sơn, in Hanoi this week to continue building our education links with one of the fastest growing economies in the region as part of the Australia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. 

Minister Giles will travel to Singapore to advance collaboration with a global leader in VET, strengthening institutional partnerships and exploring shared workforce and skills priorities.  

Assistant Minister Hill will also meet with key institutions and officials in Sri Lanka to highlight Australia’s contribution to transnational education and support for skills development.
