Simpson Prize secured

The Australian Government has confirmed it will invest $910,000 to fund the Simpson Prize for the next four years in recognition of its importance to history education.

The Prize is for Year 9 and 10 students for an outstanding essay on a question about the contribution of Australians during the First World War.

Winners from each state and territory participate in a three-day history program in Canberra and an overseas or domestic study tour of key wartime battlefields. Past recipients have travelled to Gallipoli or the Western Front in Belgium and France.

This investment is a recognition of the value the government places on encouraging history education in schools.
 
This year’s winners were chosen from 470 students across 64 schools. 

The Simpson Prize helps ensure we don’t just remember, but we learn.
Winning entries included essays on work opportunities for women, nurses at Gallipoli, the impacts of shellshock and the spread of the flu.

I presented this year’s winners with their awards at a presentation in Canberra today.

The funding was agreed to by former Education Minister Stuart Robert. The confirmation of this funding continues bipartisan support for the Simpson Prize since 1998.
