The Simpson Prize honours top students

Ministers:

The Hon Jason Clare MP
Minister for Education

Congratulations to the winners and runners-up of the 2023 Simpson Prize who have today been recognised at a ceremony in Parliament House.

The Simpson Prize is a national competition for Year 9 and 10 students that focuses on the service of Australians in World War I.

The eight winners and runners-up from each state and territory were selected from entries submitted by 809 students from 83 schools around Australia.

Students this year responded to the question, ‘How significant was Australia’s contribution to the Allied military victory on the Western Front in 1918?’.

The winners will now participate in a commemorative study tour to Singapore next month. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn first-hand about Singapore’s role in Australia’s wartime history.

It is through challenges such as The Simpson Prize that students learn about the experiences that helped shape modern Australia.

The Simpson Prize is an important initiative which recognises the sacrifices of Australians who gave so much in our name.

The Australian Government has proudly supported The Simpson Prize since 1998 and has provided The History Teachers’ Association of Australia with a $910,000 grant to manage the Prize until 2026.
