New Suburban University Study Hub officially opens in Broadmeadows

Ministers:

The Hon Jason Clare MP
Minister for Education
Basem Abdo MP
Member for Calwell

Victoria’s first Suburban University Study Hub, the Northern Study Hub, is now open in both Broadmeadows and Epping.

With the official launch of Broadmeadows today, university is being brought closer to students in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

The evidence shows that where Study Hubs are, university participation goes up.

Broadmeadows is located at the Hume City Council Offices and provides support services and study facilities for local students enrolled at any university or Vocational Education and Training provider.

The new location is part of the Albanese Government’s $66.9 million investment which will more than double the number of University Study Hubs across the country.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Jason Clare:

“Almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree today. But not everywhere. Not in our outer suburbs and not in regional Australia.

“That’s why we are doubling the number of University Study Hubs, to bring university closer to them.

“Now for the first time, we are putting these University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs.

“I know growing up in Western Sydney, a lot of my friends felt like university was somewhere else for someone else.

“I want this to change, and that means bringing university closer to where people live such as in Broadmeadows.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Calwell, Basem Abdo:

“Easy access to university campuses with wrap around support is important to our community.

“Having a physical site that supports more people to access and engage in a wide range of tertiary education opportunities will make a real difference to those students and their families.

“Bringing university closer to where you live will encourage more people who otherwise might decide not to go to university at all to give it a go.”

Quotes attributable to La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell:

“As a leader of education in Melbourne’s north, La Trobe is committed to working with the Broadmeadows and Epping communities to ensure they have the skills and training required.

"The Northern Study Hub will play a vital role in helping achieve the goal of doubling higher education participation and attainment by 2050, as outlined in the Universities Accord.”
