New Regional University Study Hub opens in Northam

Ministers:

The Hon Jason Clare MP
Minister for Education
Trish Cook MP
Member for Bullwinkel

A new Regional University Study Hub was officially opened today in Northam, bringing university closer for local residents in Western Australia.

The new Northam University Study Hub, located on Wellington Street, is part of the Australian Government’s $66.9 million investment to double the number of University Study Hubs across the country.

A recommendation of the Universities Accord, the University Study Hubs will help more people from regional and remote Australia and the outer suburbs of Australia’s major cities get a crack at going to university.

While nearly half of young Australians have a university qualification, rates are significantly lower in regional Australia. In Northam, just over 11 per cent of young people have a degree.

The evidence shows that where Study Hubs are, university participation goes up.

Fifty-two Regional University Study Hubs are currently open around the country, with a further four to open by early next year.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Jason Clare:

“Today, almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree. But not everywhere. Not in regional Australia, not in communities like Northam.

“In the years ahead more jobs will require more skills.

“The Government has set a target that by 2050, 80 per cent of workers will have a TAFE or university qualification.

“To hit that target we have to break down the invisible barrier that stops a lot of people from the bush getting a crack at going to university.

“The evidence is that where Study Hubs are, university participation goes up. That’s why we are doubling the number.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Bullwinkel Trish Cook:

“This new Study Hub means young people in the Wheatbelt don’t need to travel to Perth to study. They can get the same opportunity closer to home.

“Whether you’re studying at TAFE or university, this Hub will give students the support, technology and connection they need to succeed.

“This is about removing the barriers that have held back people in regional WA from getting a degree.”
