New suburban university study hub opens in Sorell

Ministers:

The Hon Rebecca White MP
Member for Lyons

A new Suburban University Study Hub has officially opened today in Sorell, bringing university closer for students in south-east Tasmania.

Nearly half of young Australians have a degree, but not in Sorell where only 27.8 per cent of young people have a degree.

The evidence shows that where Study Hubs are, university participation goes up.

The Southeast Tasmania Study Hub is located at 4 Dubs and Co Drive Sorell and offers local support services and study facilities for students enrolled at any university or vocational education and training provider.

The Hub is part of the Albanese Government’s $66.9 million investment to more than double the number of University Study Hubs across the country.

It is the fourth Study Hub to open in Tasmania with three other Hubs located at Zeehan/Smithton, St Helens and King Island.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Jason Clare:

“Almost one in two young people have a university degree today. But not everywhere. Not in our outer suburbs and not in Sorrell.

“That’s why we are doubling the number of University Study Hubs, to bring university closer to them.

“We know they work. The evidence is they increase the number of people going to uni in areas where they are established.

“Now for the first time, we are putting these University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs.

“I know growing up in Western Sydney, a lot of my friends felt like university was somewhere else for someone else.

“I want this to change, and that means bringing university closer to where people live, in areas such as Sorell.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Lyons, Rebecca White:

“Whether you are studying at TAFE or university, I encourage all local students to utilise the facilities at the new Southeast Tasmania Study Hub.

“Being a former Sorell School student, I know just how much this will change the game for local students aspiring for university, and I’m thrilled to see those barriers finally coming down.

“This is a great addition for young people and adult learners in our community and I’m really pleased the Albanese Labor Government is investing in opportunities that support Tasmanians get the skills and qualifications they need for the future.”
