New Suburban University Study Hub opens in Playford

Ministers:

The Hon Jason Clare MP
Minister for Education
Mr Matt Burnell MP
Member for Spence

A new Suburban University Study Hub (SUSH) has officially opened today in Playford, bringing university closer for students in northern Adelaide.

After operating from a temporary location at Playford Library last year, Uni Hub Playford has re-opened at its permanent home.

Nearly half of young Australians have a degree, but not in Elizabeth where only around 7.2 per cent of young people have a degree.

The evidence shows that where Study Hubs are, university participation goes up.

Uni Hub Playford is located at TAFE SA Elizabeth Campus, 20 Woodford Road and offers support services and study facilities for local students enrolled at any university or vocational education and training provider.

This is part of the Albanese Government’s $66.9 million investment to more than double the number of University Study Hubs across the country.

Uni Hub Playford joins the 8 Regional University Study Hubs (RUSH) already open to improve tertiary access and success across South Australia.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Jason Clare:

“Almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree today. But not everywhere. Not in our outer suburbs and not in regional Australia.

“That’s why we are doubling the number of University Study Hubs, to bring university closer to them.

“We know they work. The evidence is they increase the number of people going to uni in areas where they are established.

“Now for the first time, we are putting these University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs.

“I know growing up in Western Sydney, a lot of my friends felt like university was somewhere else for someone else.

“I want this to change, and that means bringing university closer to where a lot of people live like Elizabeth.”

Quotes attributable to Matt Burnell MP:

“With 90% of new jobs requiring a post-school qualification, it is essential that barriers to study are brought down.

“Travel time is a huge obstacle. Over 2 hours is lost travelling from the North to Uni campuses around the city, making it difficult to balance study, work, and life in general.

“The Playford Uni Hub has been delivered by the Albanese Labor Government to ensure our community is not left behind, that the door to opportunity is open.”
