New Suburban University Study Hub opens in Beenleigh

Ministers:

The Hon Jason Clare MP
Minister for Education
Rowan Holzberger MP
Member for Forde

A new Suburban University Study Hub (SUSH) has opened today in Beenleigh, bringing university closer for students in the Logan City region.

Nearly half of young Australians have a degree, but not in Beenleigh, where only around 15 per cent of young people have a degree.

The evidence shows that where Study Hubs are, university participation goes up.

The new Beenleigh University Study Hub is located at 2/12 Intercity Circuit and offers support services and study facilities for local students enrolled at any university or vocational education and training provider.

The new Hub is part of the Albanese Government’s $66.9 million investment to more than double the number of University Study Hubs across the country.

It is the second Suburban University Study Hub to open in Queensland, following the Strathpine University Study Hub, which opened north of Brisbane earlier this year.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Jason Clare:

“Almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree today. But not everywhere. Not in our outer suburbs and not in Beenleigh.

“That’s why we are doubling the number of University Study Hubs, to bring university closer to them.

“We know they work. The evidence is they increase the number of people going to uni in areas where they are established.

“Now for the first time, we are putting these University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs.

“I know growing up in Western Sydney, a lot of my friends felt like university was somewhere else for someone else.

“I want this to change, and that means bringing university closer to where people live, in areas such as Beenleigh.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Forde Rowan Holzberger:

“The new Beenleigh University Study Hub will give people across southern Logan and the northern Gold Coast the chance to study right here in our community.

“It’s about giving locals the opportunity to gain new skills, get a better job, and build a better life - without the long commute.

“Labor is rebuilding Australia’s education system to ensure everyone has a fair go and the opportunity for a great future.”
