World-leading research will take place at Griffith University thanks to Morrison Government funding.
The Morrison Government is providing $2.1 million to fund five research projects at Griffith University, through the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA).
Member for Moncrieff Angie Bell congratulated the researchers who will conduct world-leading research.
"One project will develop a real-time tool for identifying online fake news driven by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This will benefit everyone who uses social media and is worried about the impact of fake news on society," Ms Bell said.
"These are world-leading research projects addressing important issues that will make a real difference to every Australian."
Griffith University Vice Chancellor and President Professor Carolyn Evans said the funding acknowledged Griffith’s reputation for undertaking world-class research across a range of academic fields and with clear societal impact.
"The diversity of projects approved for 2020 further highlights the university’s commitment and capacity to produce high-impact, future-focused research for the betterment of society in Australia and across the world," Professor Evans said.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan said research done at our universities led to the development of new products and innovations that drive job growth, business opportunities and productivity gains.
"The productive capacity of our nation relies on educated workers, able to access innovation and research, to drive growth and opportunity," Mr Tehan said.
"Our Government is making a significant investment in Australia’s next generation of researchers working in key priority areas to grow our research and innovation capacity.
"This research will generate new knowledge, develop new technologies, and lead to new products and jobs. The research targeting natural disasters will make Australians safer and improve how we prepare for future challenges."
The Morrison Government is providing $81.8 million to fund 200 research projects through the DECRA program.
