Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education launched this year’s National Youth Week.

National Youth Week is an annual Commonwealth, state, territory and local government initiative celebrating young Australians and runs from Friday 4 April to Sunday 13 April.

This year’s theme ‘Our Voice. Our Impact.’ was  chosen by the young members on the National Planning Group following consultation with young Australians.

“This year’s theme and the many activities around the country involve young people expressing their views and ideas in a variety of ways” Senator Ryan said.

“National Youth Week aims to recognise and celebrate the value of all young Australians within their communities.

Senator Ryan said he looked forward to the week including the National Youth Awards presentation on 10 April.

“The National Youth Awards will see young Australians recognised across six award categories – Health and Wellbeing, Creating Pathways, Community Leadership, Safer Communities, Personal Courage, and Cultural Understanding.

“A seventh category, the Positive Media Award, recognises the contribution made by Australian journalists and media organisations in positively portraying young people in the media.”

Senator Ryan said unemployment is an especially high priority this year with Australia hosting the Youth 20 Summit on July 12-15 in Sydney as part of the nation’s Presidency of the G20, where the issue of Youth Unemployment will have a particular focus.
