Faster NAPLAN results putting Students First
- Minister for Education
- Leader of the House
This year’s NAPLAN results are now becoming available to parents across Australia.
Minister for Education the Hon Christopher Pyne MP said the faster turnaround of NAPLAN results in 2014 follows agreement by all Australian education ministers that the quicker return of individual student results for diagnostic purposes will be beneficial and improve student learning.
“The Australian Government has made significant progress towards meeting its election commitment to return student results from NAPLAN tests to parents within 12 weeks,” Mr Pyne said.
“This Government believes parents and teachers should receive information about students’ NAPLAN results much earlier so that targeted and timely action can be taken to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of young people.
“I am pleased to report the significant timeline reductions implemented by all states and territories means that the 2014 NAPLAN results are now starting to be delivered to schools and parents across the country.
“Breaking the cycle of the lengthy delivery of NAPLAN results that has existed since 2008 is in line with our priority to put students first.”
To facilitate a faster turnaround of results, a new feature of NAPLAN in 2014 is the redesign of the preliminary data released by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority. This data will be delivered in a new online format designed to be more user friendly and easily accessible.
NAPLAN tests the capabilities of over 1.1 million students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in five key areas of foundational skills which are Reading, Persuasive Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy.
The results show that on average, more than 92.1 per cent of the over 1.1 million school students who took part in this year’s national literacy and numeracy testing achieved at or above the national minimum standards in almost all areas tested.
The timeline reductions mean parents will soon receive their child’s individual student report which will be delivered to schools from now until 8 September.
The full NAPLAN National Report will be released in December 2014. Individual school information will also be available on My School in early 2015.
The Australian Government’s Students First approach focuses on four key areas to make practical improvements for students:
- improving teacher quality
- increasing school autonomy
- engaging parents in education
- strengthening the curriculum.
The national summary information will be available on www.nap.edu.au on Monday 18 August 2014.
