The importance of international education to Australia came to the fore during meetings with alumni in Jakarta as part of the Indonesia Australia Business Week which included Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships alumni, and newly awarded recipients of this highly regarded program.
Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator Richard Colbeck also met with recipients and alumni of Australia Awards, University of Tasmania, the Conference of Australian and Indonesian Youth and New Colombo Plan.
“The Government recognises the importance of international education to Australia's ongoing social, cultural and economic growth and that is why I am in Indonesia this week discussing further opportunities for our countries to work together," said Senator Colbeck.
“The New Colombo Plan and Endeavour programs offer significant study and research opportunities that promote knowledge, educational links and enduring ties between Australia and Indonesia, and other countries in the region
“Indonesia is one of the New Colombo Plan’s most popular study destinations for Australians with 2000 students in the first three years of the program—that’s about 20 per cent of the total number of students supported by the program.
“The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships program has supported over 190 Indonesian students to undertake study, research or professional development in Australia since 2007, while 89 Australians have had the opportunity to do the same in Indonesia.
“I was pleased to announce the 2016 recipients of Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships recently. Of the 698 students who will receive support, 14 Indonesians will be able to undertake study, research or professional development in Australia and 3 Australians will study in Indonesia.
“International education generates important people-to-people links that underpin Australia's research, trade, investment and social engagement with Indonesia and the world.”
