Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, has commended the Y20 Planning Group on their work to date and their focus on youth employment.

On behalf of young delegates from G20 countries, the Australian Y20 Planning Group recently presented its draft proposals to the G20 Sherpas. The three proposals centred on encouraging youth entrepreneurship; enhancing labour mobility to help young people move to where the work is; and tackling youth unemployment – a challenge for many G20 countries.

“I would like to thank the Y20 Planning Group on its work coordinating the Y20 Summit to this point,” Senator Ryan said.

“I am particularly encouraged that the young delegates have chosen to focus on issues of youth employment. A job gives young people a sense of purpose, and the chance to improve themselves.”

Senator Ryan reiterated the words of Prime Minister Tony Abbott that the G20 “is about people, not governments”.

“Through their thoughtful proposals to the G20 Sherpas, the Y20 Planning Group has shown that the Y20 Summit will be about enhancing opportunity for young people,” Senator Ryan said.

“I look forward to welcoming the 120 delegates to Sydney this weekend at the Y20 Summit and hearing their views on ways to get more young people into work.”

The Y20 Summit is the official youth engagement of the G20 and one of five engagement groups affiliated with the G20. It will meet from July 12-15 in Sydney.
